New York Mets newbie outfielder Juan Soto made headlines with his press conference on Thursday. However, the joyous moment was short-lived on social media where fans started making fun of his potbelly images.

Many questioned how he ended up being fat since the postseason, and some even referenced the million dollars he took from the Mets as a cause. Soto penned a 15-year $765 million contract with his former team’s cross-city rivals on free agency.

His signing caused a lot of controversies as he left the Bronx, which offered a 16-year $760 million deal. Yankees fans were furious. Some even burned the No.22 jersey. Juan Soto’s deal with the Mets included many positives among which were keeping his old jersey no. and getting a suite for his family and friends.

There were several rumors on how the NY Yankees didn’t offer him any for his family’s comfort during the games. However, former Yankee player Johnny Damon talked about how it’s the organization’s rule to do so. He even mentioned Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter who also had to pay for their suites.

Furthermore, he believes the Yankees “dodged a bullet” with him going to Queens on $765 million. While losing Soto was undoubtedly hard on the pinstripes, they’ll get the better deal at the end.

Damon believes it best to offer 5 years – 8 years to a new player than stay committed to someone for 15 years down the road. Furthermore, the Yankees can add a couple of players to fill in Soto’s gap and strengthen the lineup.

The New York Yankees have already moved on from Soto and started adding players like ace pitcher Max Fried and Devin Williams. They are also looking to add offensive power from free agency but who they’ll sign with is still in rumors.

Juan Soto on the other hand, was all smiles at the press conference. He talked about how NY has always been a Mets town and in time will show whether it’s Yankees or them. He is fully ready to take on the 2025 challenge along with new teammates in the Queens.

Although he may have to lose some weight before that happens. Fans on social media trolled Soto for his potbelly images on Thursday saying, “Bro ate the money.” Another noted, “Almost $800 million and Juan Soto got the tío belly already?!?.” Check more reactions below:

With Juan Soto starting his new life with the New York Mets, the Yankees are left to fend for themselves. So far they’ve added and traded players to boost their lineup. Everyone is waiting for a Yankees-Mets faceoff for a seat in October games. Which team makes it to the top will be worth checking out.
