Ugo Humbert locked horns with Adrian Mannarino in the round of 16 in the Open Occitaine in Montpellier on Wednesday (February 4). One incident from the match raised a lot of eyebrows.

Humbert squandered a match point, and this helped Mannarino force the tie-breaker. In the tie-breaker, Mannarino won three consecutive points, but his opponent was able to reel off four back-to-back points.

On his serve, Humbert quickly walked to his bench and started to search for something in his bag. In a clip that has gone viral, Humbert could be seen picking up his phone and checking something for a few seconds before leaving it in his bag and apologizing to both Mannarino and the chair umpire.

Players picking up their phones after winning matches is not an uncommon scene. Women’s World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka used one of her team members’ phones to take a picture of a disputed ball mark in a clay-court event last year. Because of this, she also received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

In the recently concluded Australian Open, Carlos Alcaraz, after becoming the youngest Career Grand Slam champion by defeating Novak Djokovic in the final, reached for his phone while the officials were preparing for the trophy presentation.

One incident in a match in 2024 left the crowd as well as Djokovic and the umpire in stitches. During his match against the 24-time Grand Slam champion, Corentin Moutet‘s alarm went off. Moutet at first was confused due to the sound before realizing that it’s phone that was ringing.

The win helped Mannarino improve his head-to-head record over his compatriot to 3-1. Prior to this match, they met in the 2018 Paris Masters, 2023 Hall of Fame Open (Mannarino won both matches), and the 2023 Roland Garros (Humbert won).

Mannarino started his campaign for the 2026 season at the Hong Kong Open, where he lost to Marin Cilic in his opening round. Then at the ASB Classic, he suffered a defeat in the first round at the hands of Eliot Spizzirri, who made headlines at the Australian Open after taking a set off four-time Grand Slam champion Jannik Sinner in the third round.

In the Melbourne Slam, Mannarino played singles as well as doubles. In singles, he lost to Rinky Hijikata in the first round, while in doubles, he and partner Fabrice Martin lost to the pair of Theo Arribage and Albano Olivett.

The 37-year-old has so far lifted five titles, with his last title coming at the 2023 Sofia Open at the hands of Jack Draper. He has yet to play a final since that win.

Humbert, on the other hand, last won a title against Hamad Medjedovic in the 2025 Open 13. Last year, he also made one more final: he lost the Stockholm Open to three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud. This year, he failed to beat Tomas Machac in the Adelaide International final.
