Manchester United midfielder, Antony has promised to turn things around for the upcoming season. He has been a part of the Red Devils under the reign of Erik ten Hag since 2022. There were lofty expectations from the Brazilian winger but upon arrival, he has failed to bring out the best in him.
From the 54 Premier League appearances that he has been a part of, Antony has scored five goals and has carved three assists. In the last season, Manchester United recorded their worst-ever Premier League finish as they ended the race in the eighth position. He just scored a solitary goal throughout the campaign, helping United to salvage a draw against Burnley. Alongside Antony’s on-ground woes, he was also alleged of domestic abuse by his former girlfriend, a report that is still undergoing investigation.
I demand a lot of myself and obviously I was not satisfied with my season. But I've got a strong mentality and I'm focused on what I want. I know this season will be totally different. More goal participations, more assists, where I need to improve. I put them down on paper rather than on my phone. For every game I need to put something in writing – goals, shots on goal, dribbling, everything.Antony told BBC Sport in an exclusive interview.
It is going to be intriguing to see whether the Brazilian winger finds himself in the starting XI. Manchester United are geared up for their opening game for the Community Shield against Manchester City. The game will be played on the 10th of August at the Wembley Stadium.
What is expected of Erik ten Hag?
A lot of eyes will be on Erik ten Hag as the fans hope to recover from what they saw in the last season. However, in a late arc of redemption, the Red Devils managed to secure the FA Cup, pipping the Premier League champions, Manchester City by a slender margin of 2-1.
With new signings of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro (to return after three months due to injury) and hot pursuits of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, Manchester United will be hopeful of returning to their very best in the upcoming season. Antony’s latest interview didn’t really convince the fans of the fact that he can still be the game-changer.
Only time shall tell what should be Manchester United’s future as they kickstart the season with a clash against Manchester City. However, their gaffer, Erik ten Hag will be hopeful of a positive turnaround of affairs as another new dawn comes knocking.
