UEFA Euro 2024 was one of the most exciting tournaments of this year, with Spain coming out on top in the end. La Roja beat Germany on their way to the title as a controversial handball call saw Spain escape punishment in the quarterfinals. An uproar on social media followed, with many criticizing VAR and the referee’s decision to turn down German appeals for a handball.

Recently, the focus has shifted back to the incident after the UEFA Referees Committee admitted to making a mistake in the quarterfinal. The incident was taken under consideration when the organization periodically analyzed European matches to standardize decision-making across Europe.

An official document released by UEFA stated that direct hand-to-ball contact should be published more strictly, with ‘most’ cases being rewarded with a penalty.

The document then revisited the Marc Cucurella incident and stated that the right decision should’ve been a handball to Germany.

Fans react as UEFA admits to error made against Germany

Spain beat Germany 2-1 in the quarterfinals of UEFA Euro 2024 on July 5. Nearly two-and-a-half months later, UEFA issued a notification about Marc Cucurella’s handball incident, evoking passionate reactions from fans on social media. A fan commented that UEFA’s reaction to the same was a little too late to be relevant.

Many German fans argued that they lost the tie because of the error and that UEFA made a grave mistake in the process. Others expressed their frustration at how ‘poor officiating’ cost Germany the game and how it denied Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer, and Thomas Muller an International trophy in their final tournament. Many also called the decision unacceptable, as it also influenced Barcelona and Man City target Jamal Musiala‘s position in the Ballon d’Or rankings.

Here are some of the fan reactions:

It is undeniable that refereeing decisions have the ability to alter how games turn out and that what happened with Germany is unfortunate. The fact that UEFA is willing to own up to its mistakes and is willing to rectify them in upcoming matches is the least they can do. Fans can rest assured that refereeing and VAR referrals will have uniform outcomes in the near future, thereby assuring fair and equal opportunity for all teams.
