“They dropped the ball”- Wrestling fans voice their displeasure over 38-year-old star’s lackluster AEW run as he finally requests his release from the company

It’s never a good look when a wrestler decides to request his/her release from any promotion. This time around, the call has been made by Miro, and he has informed AEW that he’s willing to leave the company. The news was first broken by Fightful Select. The outlet further noted that the former Rusev was internally considered for this year’s Casino Gauntlet match at the All In pay-per-view.
Moreover, the 38-year-old expressed his desire to work with Jon Moxley earlier this year. However, just like it’s been the case in his years of stay with the Jacksonville-based promotion, Miro and AEW weren’t getting along creatively. His current deal runs until the Spring of 2026 but he wants out. At this point, Tony Khan hasn’t granted the dissonant star the release he’s seeking. The latter’s been off TV since AEW Worlds End last year.
On the said show, he beat Andrade El Edolo, who later went on to make his WWE return at the Royal Rumble. Will Miro tread likewise? Time will tell. There was a patch in Miro’s AEW career when he was at the top of his game. Having held the AEW TBS title for 140 days isn’t lost on anyone. But after he dropped the gold to Sammy Guevara, the Bulgarian wrestler couldn’t reclaim what was his.
At last year’s All Out PPV, the former WWE US Champion beat Powerhouse Hobbs. However, what caught the fans off guard was the post-match shenanigans, which saw Miro’s then-wife, CJ Perry, fka Lana, show up.
She walked down that aisle to level up the odds for her husband, who was blindsided by Hobbs. The real-life couple was expected to thrive together quite like they did in WWE. However, it didn’t happen. Earlier this year, in March, it was reported that Miro and CJ had split up.
Fans lambast AEW for nullifying Miro’s momentum
Although it was expected that the fans would make a fuss out of Miro requesting his AEW release, they’ve been at it all day long. There’s been a chunk of them on social media clamoring a WWE return for the Bulgarian Brute.
One of the most fancied dream matches for the 38-year-old if he does go back to WWE is with the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther. Most of the fans are already daydreaming about that encounter.
Apart from that, there’s a sense of frustration as well in regards to how much the former Rusev was subdued in AEW. Some claim that the company wasted him and he was majorly underutilized during his tenure. The only silver lining was the decent run he had as the AEW TBS Champion.
