Mike Tomlin got outcoached by DeMeco Ryans as the Houston Texans defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 30-6 in the AFC Wildcard Round game. It was Tomlin and the Steelers’ seventh straight loss in the playoffs.

Tomlin watched from the sidelines as Aaron Rodgers wasn’t in sync with his receivers. The veteran quarterback, who could retire, completed 17 passes from 33 attempts for 146 yards, threw zero touchdowns, and conceded one interception, including a pick-6.

Wide receiver DK Metcalf returned to the starting lineup after missing the last two regular-season games due to suspension, managed to catch only two passes over four quarters. Moreover, the rungame yielded just 63 yards. As a matter of fact, the Texans had more rushing yards than the Steelers overall.

Fans inside the Acrisure Stadium booed the Steelers at the final whistle. Speaking to the press post-game, the 53-year-old addressed the fans with a stern message.

Words are cheap. It’s about what you do, or you don’t do. People talk too much in our business. You either do or you don’t.

Mike Tomlin declared

Tomlin’s playoff record dropped to 8-12. His last victory came in the 2017 wildcard against the Cleveland Browns.

Fans want the Steelers to fire Mike Tomlin

Tomlin is the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL. He took over in the 2007 season and proudly boasts of never finishing with a losing record.

His best moment came a year after his appointment. With Ben Roethlisberger as his quarterback, the Steelers won the Super Bowl and the club’s sixth ring. They returned to the Super Bowl after a one-year gap, but lost against Rodgers and the Packers.

That was the high point of Tomlin’s career. The best his Steelers could manage were a couple of divisional round appearances in the following years. After losing to the Texans in the most recent playoffs, Tomlin joined former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis (2005-15) as the only coaches in NFL history to lose 7 straight playoff games.

The Steelers are one of football’s elite franchises, so going seven years without a postseason win is tough to swallow. Naturally, that kind of drought is bound to spark some backlash.

Rodgers’ future is uncertain, but he doesn’t want to see the Steelers fire Tomlin.

Mike T [Tomlin] has had more success than damn near anybody in the league for the last 19, 20 years. And more than that, though, when you have the right guy and the culture is right, you don’t think about making a change.

Aaron Rodgers said via Brooke Pryor of ESPN

Football is a results-oriented business, and coaches get fired after every season. This year alone, there have been seven firings, with the Ravens parting ways with John Harbaugh among them. So, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Steelers take a similar approach with Tomlin.
