It is no secret that FC Barcelona are chasing the signature of Euro cup hero Nico Williams. The 22-year-old set the stage on fire as he spearheaded La Roja’s victory in the competition. Alongside Barcelona’s very own Lamine Yamal, the speedy winger was no match for any side that he came up against. Despite reports that talks are in advanced stages with the youngster, there has been no solid developments regarding the same.
As the summer transfer window heats up, a surprising new development has posed the potential to change the entire course of the Williams saga. It is understood that Barcelona have found a potential ‘substitute’ for the Athletic Club man if the deal fails to become a reality. As per reports, Barcelona believe that Kingsley Coman of Bayern Munich is an alternative to the 22-year-old.
Even though there is over a month left in the transfer window, the club will consider moving on to Coman if Williams says ‘no’ to the club’s offer. It was reported earlier that Williams’ elder brother Inaki is trying to convince him to stay.
Though news outlets claim that Williams is closer to saying ‘yes’ than ‘no’, nothing can be taken for granted in the market.
Joan Laporta to ‘replace’ sporting director Deco in Nico Williams negotiations
It appears that Barcelona President Joan Laporta has had enough of the indecision surrounding Nico Williams‘ potential move to the club. With the deal to bring the player to Barcelona going nowhere, reports suggest that the President himself is set to step in and lead the discussions. The 62-year-old believes that Williams’ signing is a necessity.
As per SPORT, Laporta thinks that his move can be completed if talks are manoeuvred in the right way. Even though the President insists that the Barcelona train will not pass again, finances are no longer an obstruction to the deal. The club are willing to offer a total salary of €12 million per year and hope to bring him home on a five-year contract.
The player is now tasked with the difficult decision of not wanting to spoil his relationship with Athletic Club while also weighing in his goals and aspirations for his career on the other side. Barcelona are more than willing to pay his release clause of €62 million in hopes that he teams up with international teammate Lamine Yamal. Williams’ contract with his club runs until 2027.
