At the MMA Hour Show with Ariel Helwani, Curtis revealed the reason his teammate can’t travel with him to the UK and what went wrong with Sean against Alex Pereira.
Chris Curtis was called in to replace Darren Till on short notice at UFC London. Chris Curtis reveals Sean Strickland’s original Game Plan against Alex Pereira
The reason Curtis had to ask Till to corner him is that his teammate and fellow middleweight contender Sean Strickland can not travel to the UK in order be at the O2 cornering him. When asked by Helwani if there was any reason as to why that was, Curtis replied, “It’s because Sean quote-unquote ‘lost his passport’ “ later joking that he hasn’t recently checked the latest Government Watch List for Sean’s name in it.
After this Helwani asked Curtis about what went wrong in his fight against Pereira. Curtis who had been with Strickland throughout the training camp clarified that his pride got the better off him. Strickland who is a black belt in Jiu-jitsu was supposed to tire out Pereira and go for a submission victory.
The camp said to Strickland, “Stay connected to him, don’t trade with him in kickboxing range, stay connected, drag him down, wear him down beat him up or submit him” with Curtis the saying he expected the fight to end via a TKO victory for Sean clarifying that everyone knew an exhausted Pereira was Sean’s best shot at victory.
“But Sean’s like F*ck your Kickboxing, I’m gonna kickbox you” said Curtis while chuckling. It was this decision that cost him the fight and his #4 rank at middleweight. Curtis will face off against Jack Hermansson at UFC London, looking to extend his winning streak to 5 within a 365-day window.
