Russell Wilson is as competitive as a football player can be and always wants to play every single game, whether it’s regular season or pre-season. However, at the Pittsburgh Steelers, the almost 36-year-old has a much younger Justin Fields stealing the spotlight every day at training camp.
On the other hand, Wilson recently returned to practice after finally feeling recovered enough from a recurring calf problem. After Wednesday’s practice, the 9-time pro bowler spoke with the media, providing inside knowledge about his sore calf.
I'm feeling great. Just to be fully in practice and involved and doing everything. I've been involved in doing all the drills and everything for the past seven [or] eight days, however many days it has been. But to be fully in there with the team drills, [and] everything else, it feels great.Russell Wilson said
Although Wilson arrived in Pittsburgh before Fields, the 25-year-old took more reps and appeared to have quickly adapted to Mike Tomlin and Arthur Smith’s playbook. Tomlin rewarded Fields as the starter for the Steelers against the Houston Texans in their first pre-season game over the weekend.
Wilson accepted the decision, but he still hopes to feature for the team to get a feel for the black and gold.
I always want to play… Whether it's preseason or if it's regular season… The good thing is I get to take everything in and just learn and be in that stadium for the first time. I can't wait [because] It's going to be amazing to be in Acrisure Stadium wearing the black and gold.Russell Wilson said via Steelers transcript

Despite Justin Fields’ great showing in the Steelers camp, Russell Wilson might be named the starter in the regular season
Justin Fields reportedly threw more than 25 touchdowns since the training camp started. His link-up with wideout George Pickens thrilled the Steelers fans who saw their team missing out on another year of playoff football in 2023.
However, Fields is not out of the woods just yet because Tomlin will give Wilson the fair chance he deserves. The veteran head coach who earlier this year extended his contract praised the Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
Russell [Wilson] has those resources, man, that structure, and so that's why I say he has pole position, man.Mike Tomlin said

In Tomlin’s view, competition among quarterbacks brings synergy. Obviously, he witnessed Fields still having a lot of meat left on his bones and can make a difference when required.
Russell Wilson only played 15 games last season for the Broncos due to contract issues with the front office. He threw 297 completions for 3070 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, finishing with a 7-8 record.
