Canada are at the top of Group B in the ongoing United Cup. They first went past China 3-0 thanks to Victoria Mboko and Felix Auger-Aliassime‘s powerful performances.
Mboko came from a set down to defeat Zhu Lin 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Auger-Aliassime went past Zhang Zhizhen 6-4, 6-4. Later in mixed doubles, the pair of Mboko and Auger-Aliassime beat the pair of You Xiaodi and Te Rigele 6-1, 6-3. At the press conference after the clean sweep, Auger-Aliassime expressed his wish to team up with Mboko for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
I’m very happy because it’s the first match of the year for both of us, our first time playing mixed doubles. There are a lot of debuts, and that also brings a lot of uncertainty. Obviously, she had a very good year, and so did I.
Mboko had a breakthrough season last year. She won her career’s first WTA title, and it came at the Canadian Open. En route to the WTA 1000 title, she knocked out first seed Coco Gauff and ninth seed Elena Rybakina before defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the title clash.
She then doubled her title tally by defeating Cristina Bucsa in the Hong Kong Open final. The win helped the 19-year-old reach her career-best No.19 on the rankings table.
It was great to be able to share the court with Victoria. Even during the doubles match, I was thinking about the upcoming Olympics, thinking this could be a good thing. If we both continue to play good tennis and stay healthy, a lot can happen. I was really happy to see her make such a big leap last year. It’s always good to have a strong male and female player on the tour. You feel like they push each other to be better.
Felix Auger-Aliassime added
Auger-Aliassime, for the second time in his career, made five finals in a single season. Last year, the 25-year-old lifted the Adelaide International and the Open Sud de France by defeating Sebastian Korda and Aleksandar Kovacevic, respectively.
Later, Stefanos Tsitsipas denied him the Dubai Open. Auger-Aliassime clinched his third title of the season at the European Open by defeating Jiri Lehecka, but failed to go past World No.2 Jannik Sinner in the Paris Masters final.
Victoria Mboko on her first match of the season
At the press conference after Canada’s win over China, Victoria Mboko analyzed her performance versus Zhu Lin. Mboko admitted that in the beginning of the match, she was struggling to find her rhythm.

At the beginning of the match, I felt a little disoriented, getting used to the court and the balls. I’m glad I found my rhythm, that I found the momentum to turn the match around. Once I got into a rhythm and did what I usually do, I discovered that, in a way, I was more myself. In the end, I felt more comfortable, especially in the last few games, playing my tennis from start to finish. It was a really good feeling.
Canada will next be locking horns with Belgium. Felix Auger-Alissiame will face Zizou Bergs, while Mbooko will be squaring off against Elise Mertens.
Because of her ranking, Mboko will be seeded at the Australian Open, which starts on January 18. Mboko made her Grand Slam main draw debut last year at the French Open and reached the third round, but Qinwen Zheng knocked her out. At Wimbledon, she suffered defeat at the hands of Hailey Baptiste, while Barbora Krejcikova denied her progress into the second round of the US Open.
