There’s no doubt that Felix Auger-Aliassime’s fourth-round Wimbledon clash with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has sparked bad blood between them. The match, held on Sunday (July 5), ended in the Canadian ace’s favor with scores of 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-1 in four hours and 26 minutes.

But the match was not without some drama, which also included a fiery handshake at the net. The argument was due to a medical timeout that Fokina took in the middle of a game. Fokina appeared to injure his ankle and called for a medical timeout after saving two match points on Auger-Aliassime’s serve in the fourth set.

When the match resumed, Fokina won the set to force the decider, but all he could win in that set was just one game. Then, during the handshake, they had a heated argument about which Auger-Aliassime chose not to reveal the details. He instead criticized the medical timeout rule.

Well, the interactions between him and I, I don’t want to get into that. If he wants to come in here and talk about it, he can. But he knows my opinion. That’s one of these things that I have differences with people in my life on tour. They know what I think. That’s the most important. Now what I can say, though, is that I think the rule has to change. I think that obviously, as long as the rule is like that, a player will use it to their advantage.

Felix Auger-Aliassime said at the press conference

Auger-Aliassime will be playing the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time since 2021. Since that run until this Wimbledon, he had failed to make it to the third round of the event.

Basically, when you’re hurt bad, you’re forfeiting every point until you can call the physio. If the physio helps you recover, you play your service game. If you’re hurt bad, then you retire, obviously. But to stop in the middle of an opponent’s service game and to be able to call the physio, I think that’s a disgrace of a rule. I don’t see any other sport where you can do that. I mark my words. It’s a disgrace of a rule.

Felix Auger-Aliassime added

Auger-Aliassime will also be playing back-to-back Grand Slam quarterfinals. At the French Open, he lost to eventual runner-up Flavio Cobolli.

Felix Auger-Aliassime will play Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon quarterfinals

Felix Auger-Aliassime has a difficult challenge in front of him because he will be facing none other than seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. The Serb overcame qualifier Roman Safiullin in four sets in the previous round.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion holds a 1-1 head-to-head record over the World No.4. They will be facing each other for the first time since the 2022 Laver Cup.

Djokovic, who last lifted the title at SW19 back in 2022 by defeating Nick Kyrgios, lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner in the semifinal last year. But he has already played one Grand Slam final this year.

At the Australian Open, he snapped his five-match losing streak against the four-time Grand Slam champion in the semifinals. But in the final, World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz denied him his 25th Major.

It was Alcaraz who stopped the Serb from completing the Calendar Grand Slam with a five-set win at the 2023 Wimbledon. Alcaraz also beat him in the final of the grass-court Major in 2024.

If Djokovic defeats Auger-Aliassime, he could set up a blockbuster match against Sinner in the semifinals. Sinner, who is chasing his sixth title of the season at Wimbledon, will face Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinals.
