A distressing incident occurred amid the celebrations of India’s 2026 T20 World Cup victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Outside the venue, while doing a live broadcast, a female journalist was inappropriately touched by a male fan.
India’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign came to an end in a spectacular fashion, with the team becoming the first nation to defend its title.
In the final, the Men in Blue raced to a first innings total of 255/5, the highest-ever in a T20 WC final, with the help of Sanju Samson’s 89 runs, and quick fifties from Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan.
New Zealand’s chase fell short, as they were bowled out for a mere 159 runs in under 19 overs, with pacer Jasprit Bumrah taking an impressive four wickets.

Fans thronged from all parts to watch the final at the massive 132,000-capacity stadium in Ahmedabad, which also happens to be the world’s largest sporting venue. A similarly large crowd had attended the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup final in Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium, underscoring the recent progress where female cricketers and sports journalists have achieved a status equal to their male counterparts.
However, this discussion has been overshadowed by a concerning incident outside the Narendra Modi Stadium, highlighting the broader issue of women’s safety in India. A RevSportz Global reporter, Gargi Raut, who was covering the mood following India’s victory, was harassed by a male fan on live television.
While she was on camera, a man wearing an Indian jersey was caught on camera inappropriately touching Raut from behind before walking away into the crowd with a smirk.
Gargi Raut was left stunned for a while, and she later posted a video clip of the incident, with the caption ‘If you put your hands on me inappropriately, I will put your face on the internet’. She tagged Ahmedabad Police in her post, seeking action against the individual. The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media, with fans, fellow journalists, and athletes calling for stricter security measures for female professionals at such major public events.
If you put your hands on me inappropriately. I will put your face on the internet.

Moreover, it is part of a deeply concerning trend of safety issues for female cricketers and professionals in India, following a similar encounter during the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. In November last year, two Australian players were inappropriately touched by a man outside in Indore.
Female Indian journalist’s harassment outside Ahmedabad stadium following T20 World Cup final sparks outrage
A female journalist was publicly harassed by an unidentified male fan outside the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, immediately after India’s T20 World Cup triumph. The incident has sparked furore among fans in the country, who have demanded swift action.

Gargi Raut, the journalist in conversation, bravely exposed the individual who touched her inappropriately by sharing footage of the incident on social media. Subsequently, Ahmedabad police have been tracking the individual, and have also used CCTV footage and the broadcast visuals. On social media, fans reacted by noting that female journalists frequently encounter similar behavior, even in England and Australia.
This is horrendous. I really feel for Gargi. I’ve been in this situation many times – and I’d emphasise it’s happened in countries like England and Australia. Men flashing, trying to touch or kiss you, shouting sexual obscenities, sometimes right in your face. /1 https://t.co/6cElIj2ozG

It is possible that he was taking his phone out of his pocket, and the madam might have felt that he intentionally touched her with his hand.

@AhmedabadPolice this was the man in the background. Get him. Your city is being tipped as global sports City with Commonwealth Games and possibly Olympics too coming in. Nab him and make a statement. pic.twitter.com/i5FVbyA4Hz

Some fans exclaimed that such misogynistic behavior is disgraceful for a city that is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. One fan questioned the suspect’s brazen public harassment of Gargi Raut, noting his apparent lack of fear of prosecution. However, a few others suggested that the journalist’s claim of an inappropriate touch might have been ‘unintentional’ due to the crowd push.
There is absolutely no fear in men . Women are right.
