Fermin Lopez is in the form of his life. The 21-year-old FC Barcelona youngster became an Olympic Gold medallist with La Roja as they demolished hosts France in the final. The Parc des Princes was witness to a game for the ages as Thierry Henry and co. were clearly second best for the first time in front of their own fans. Despite not having Lamine Yamal or Gavi in their ranks, Santi Denia‘s main man Lopez scored two amazing goals to give Spain the early advantage.

Only 11 minutes had passed since kick-off when Enzo Millot fired the hosts into the lead. However, the game was successfully turned on its head when Lopez put two quickfire goals past Guillaume Restes. With an unbelievable brace in the final, Lopez now has seven goal contributions in six games at the Paris Olympics. Spain scored a third in the 28th minute to put them 3-1 ahead, although things would quickly change in the second half.

Fans react to Fermin Lopez’s brilliant performance in the final

France were all set to be crowned Olympic Gold medalists in front of their own fans at the Parc des Princes until Fermin Lopez decided otherwise. The youngster had only returned from the Spanish camp in mid-July after a successful campaign at the Euros in Germany.

A fan commented that his amazing campaign at the Olympics was more than enough to hand him a start in midfield at club level. Seven goal contributions in six games for his country was bound to catch the attention of Hansi Flick at Barca.

The midfielder was seen ecstatic and overcome by emotion at the full-time whistle, and rightly so. It will be exciting to see what role the youngster will assume under Flick and how he makes a name for himself in a team already packed with talented teenagers. FC Barcelona kick off their league campaign against Valencia CF on the 18th of August.
