Before Mohammed Ben Sulayem became FIA president in 2021, the relationship between the FIA and Formula One Management (FOM) was generally collaborative. It focused on maintaining stability through the Concorde Agreement, which outlined the governance and revenue distribution within Formula 1.
After his appointment, tensions arose due to regulatory disputes and the fallout from the controversial Abu Dhabi GP, necessitating urgent reviews and strategic adjustments. However, Sulayem highlighted that their relationship has improved now.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem became the FIA president in 2021 and initially, the relationship with FOM was collaborative. However, disagreements arose over issues like the ban on drivers wearing jewelry and his support for expanding the F1 grid to include Michael Andretti’s Cadillac-backed team. FOM and existing teams opposed this expansion to protect their financial interests.
Throughout the 2023 season, tensions intensified, leading to rumors of a possible split between the FIA and FOM. Amid claims of seeking more financial support for the FIA, Ben Sulayem clarified that FOM now acknowledges the FIA’s essential role in the sport.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed satisfaction with the FIA’s current working relationship with FOM. Sulayem stated that he collaborates effectively with FOM bosses Greg Maffei and Stefano Domenicali. He aims to strengthen this relationship, noting significant improvements recently.
