It’s been almost a year since UFC has released the payout for the fighters, and this live event of UFC 261 will be no different, as per the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

MMA Junkie’s Nolan King confirmed this news, Florida department spokesman Patrick Fargason told king, “The purse for that event has been deemed a trade secret by the promoter and therefore exempt from public record.”

This news came out at UFC 261 press conference, UFC lobbied for the passage of Senate Bill 808 way back in 2014, which sought the limit the information to be made public about the live events both for MMA and boxing promoters.

They made the case that, “The harm to a promoter in disclosing proprietary confidential business information significantly outweighs any public benefit derived from disclosure of the information.” Fight purses obviously got lumped into the “trade secrets” category.

Although the Bill passed without any problem, the implementation of this have been quite inconsistent

SB 808 passed without any issue, but nearly every UFC live event from 2015 to 2020 had disclosed fighters’ purse to the public. The one exception was the fighting between Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Waterson at UFC Tampa.

Majority of United States ACs keeps purses confidential including New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Texas. Some exceptions are Oregon, Washington, California, Georgia, and Arizona.

The effect of this decision is quite observable as many UFC fighters are coming out complaining about the pay-issue, and for the time being we can just wait and hope for the best.
