UFC Kansas City’s main event showcased a thrilling welterweight clash between Ian Garry and rising knockout sensation Carlos Prates. Representing the Fighting Nerds, Prates looked to extend his knockout streak and undefeated status in the division. However, Garry had other plans and used his wrestling experience to pick up a win via unanimous decision.
Garry opened sharply, using his movements and jab to control Prates’ initial aggressive forward pressure effectively. The Brazilian is known for finish his opponents early, something that the Irishman wanted to avoid. Prates stayed dangerous with leg kicks and wild hooks, but Garry’s timing, composure, and slick counters kept him firmly ahead.

By round three, Ian Garry’s clinch work and body attacks drained Prates’ energy, shifting momentum clearly in the Irishman’s favor. Garry has done the same against tough opponents such as Michael Page, Geoff Neal and Neil Magny. As such, Prates knew he needed a finish. He swung for a finish late, but Garry’s defense completely neutralized any comeback attempt efficiently.
After five hard rounds, the judges scored the contents 48-47, 48-47, and 49-50 in favor of Garry, leaving no space for doubts. Garry stood tall using his wrestling, discipline, and control time to earn his eighth decision victory. With this win, the Irishman has further boosted his popularity and position as a top contender for the welterweight title.
UFC CEO reacts to Carlos Prates losing to Ian Garry
Carlos Prates quickly ascended in the UFC with a striking-focused style due to his background in Muay Thai. He made his debut last year, and managed to impress a lot of fans who were eager to see a striker in the welterweight division. Notably, he became the first fighter to knock out Li Jingliang at UFC 305 in August 2024. The rising fighter also got famous for his smoking habits, consuming 10-15 cigarettes a day.

However, his loss to Ian Garry by unanimous decision at UFC Kansas City has ruined his plans to become an undefeated champion. Ahead of the fight, both fighters had some heated exchanges, which finally got settled inside the octagon. UFC CEO Dana White was highly impressed by both the fighters and shared his opinion during the post-fight presser.

With this win, Garry has rebounded from his last loss against top contender Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310. It was a close fight where Garry came close to defeating the undefeated Kazakh fighter. However, this time, he was able to take the zero from another undefeated fighter (undefeated in the UFC) and proved his credentials.

The team consists of Caio Borralho, Carlos Prates, Mauricio Ruffy and Jean Silva, who have gained massive recognition in the UFC.

They all have different weight classes and have shown well-rounded skill sets, which combine striking and grappling. They made their name by remaining undefeated and marketing the team to the fullest. However, with the recent loss of Prates, it could definitely affect their branding. Despite that both Borralho and Silva are in a great position to become future champions and bring glory to their team.
