Find out: What Roger Federer had to say on his Olympic Dream, Family and Football World Cup

Roger Federer at the London 2012 Olympics

There are very few things that Roger Federer has not accomplished on the tennis court. He still holds the record for most Grand Slams won in the open era. But one small chink in his armor is perhaps the absence of an Olympic Gold. For Federer though the Olympics has always been much more than that one Gold medal.

In an interview, Roger Federer spoke about the significance of the Olympics in his life. Roger Federer said that he was the flag bearer for Switzerland at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Although the then World no.1 Federer could not go past the second round in Tennis Singles at the Olympics, he ended up losing to Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.

In the 2008 Olympics games in Beijing he was again the Flag bearer for Switzerland. In this edition of the Olympics he disappointed in the Singles, losing to James Blake in the Quarter Finals, but in the doubles he excelled. Together with Stan Wawrinka, Federer won the doubles gold at the 2008 Olympics. In London 2012, Federer played Andy Murray of Great Britain in the Final. The contest was held at the All England Club In Wimbledon and Federer finished runners up and won the Silver medal. Murray beat him in straight sets 6-2 6-1 6-4 and won the Gold medal. Incidentally, Federer missed the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

In the end Federer talked about meeting his wife, Mirka Federer, at the Olympic Village at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. They started dating after the games got over and got married in 2009. Federer is looking forward to being a part of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Federer says “Olympics have always been a special place for me. I was flag bearer twice, in 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing. I won gold medal with Stan Wawrinka, I won the silver in 2012 London.” Federer continued “ I met my wife in 2000 at the Olympics! It would be amazing to be part of Tokyo”.

Roger Federer has two sets of twins. His girls, Myla Rose and Charlene, are eleven and his boys, Lenny and Leo, are only six. Federer says that when he left them to play at Doha, his children were sad. Although Federer was quick to acknowledge that his wife, Mirka, has been really supportive and his kids usually are understanding and wonderful.

Federer said “I try to see how much more is left in the tank for me. So far my wife has been my biggest supporter to allow me and push me towards the tour.

Federer continued,” My kids have been wonderful as well, understanding, even though they were sad when I left and I came to Doha without them.”

For all the Federer lovers who will be in Qatar for the World Cup in 2022, there is some bad news. Roger Federer says that he will not be attending the World Cup in Doha. The World Cup usually happens between the French Open and the Wimbledon and for Federer that is the time to get ready for the grass season. Federer believes he will enjoy the world cup once he is retired from Tennis.

Federer says, “I’ve never been to a World Cup. It usually takes place between French Open & Wimbledon, and Wimbledon has always been so important to me… I will go to the World Cup when I am retired!” he concluded.
