Flavio Cobolli downed Alex de Minaur to reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the second consecutive time. On Monday (July 6), the Italian ace clinched a 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 win over the Australian ace to improve his head-to-head record to 1-2.

Right after the win, Cobolli, who played his career’s first Grand Slam final at this year’s French Open, recreated Cristiano Ronaldo‘s iconic ‘Siuuu’ celebration. Later at the press conference, the 24-year-old said he would be supporting Portugal during their World Cup match versus Spain.

I was waiting. I don’t play, so I just enjoy what the guy did on the court. I love his celebration. I love him. I love [Matheus] Cunha’s celebration, but I’m not the player on the court. I will cheer for Portugal tonight because of Ronaldo. But if they lose, it’s not because of me.

Flavio Cobolli said

Cobolli is the third Italian man to reach multiple quarterfinals at Wimbledon after Nicola Pietrangeli and Jannik Sinner. Last year at SW19, Cobolli’s run was ended by seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic. If Cobolli reaches the semifinal, he could set up a match against World No.3 Alexander Zverev, who defeated him in the Paris final.

Flavio Cobolli struggled a lot at the start of the season. He lost three consecutive opening-round matches before reaching the semifinals of the Delray Beach Open. Then in Acapulco, Cobolli beat Frances Tiafoe in the final to win his career’s third singles title. At the press conference after his latest win, Cobolli revealed his match in the Mexican city was the turning point in 2026.

In Australia, I was sick and couldn’t play well. In the other match I lost, because I lost many in a row from there, I didn’t play as well. Maybe also because after the Davis Cup, there was a lot of pressure on me. Everyone was talking about the season, where I had to improve, and so on. It wasn’t easy to find the right way to play really calmly and just play tennis. In the end, I hoped for a good result that might change something.

Cobolli suffered back-to-back early-round exits in three more events. Then, on the clay swing, after losing the Munich Open final to Ben Shelton, Cobolli lost to eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Open.

In Acapulco, I was very happy with my level. I found a way to stay at that level. From there, I believe I played good tennis throughout the week. Sometimes I’m tired. Sometimes maybe I play too much. So now I have to find the best solution to always play at 100%.

Flavio Cobolli added

Cobolli has never played a final on grass. He will next be facing the last remaining Brit, Arthur Fery, who overcame Grigor Dimitrov in a five-set thriller in the fourth round.

Cobolli will be facing Fery for the second time in his career. Fery has reached his career’s first Grand Slam quarterfinal. He, in fact, had never made it past the second round of a Major before this event.

In the other fourth-round match from this quarter, Zverev will face Jiri Lehecka, and if he wins, he will lock horns with Taylor Fritz, who holds a 10-5 head-to-head lead over him. The defending champion in this grass-court Major is World No.1 Jannik Sinner (defeated Carlos Alcaraz last year).

Sinner will face Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinals, and if he reaches the semifinals, he could schedule his match against Novak Djokovic. The Serb will meet Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last eight.
