Following Mike Perry’s weigh-in fiasco, Jon Anik comes up with an interesting point on how to deal with fighters who miss weight

Of all the 24 fighters who weighed-in for UFC 255, only “Platinum” Mike Perry missed weight. The American welterweight missed weight by over 4 pounds, weighing-in at 175.5 pounds, instead of 171 (allowance of 1 pound for non-title bouts). It raised a few eyebrows, as there have been a plenty of fighters who have taken the fight on a very short notice, but still made weight; with Paul Felder being the most recent one.
Jon Anik, the famed Mixed Martial Arts commentator was present as the announcer at the weigh-ins. Later that day, Anik took to Twitter to express his displeasure over fighters missing weights and came up with a solution which was met with a mixed response from the MMA community.
“Can’t get a win if you aren’t able to compete at the contracted weight” – Jon Anik via. Twitter
Jon Anik tweeted, “Best solution I’ve heard for penalizing fighters who have missed weight: You are fighting for a no-contest; can’t get a win if you aren’t able to compete at the contracted weight. That’d be quite the deterrent, I’d think.“
A user named Daniel Rubenstein pointed out how Rizin Fighting Federation has been using a tiered system for weight misses, posting an image which had all the rules regarding it.
Popular MMA fighter, Kaitlyn Young too weighed-in saying, “I like the idea, but it might lead to more fighters just faking an illness or injury and pulling out if they were going to have a tough cut here in the States. Maybe a year suspension from the weight class would be better? Not an easy answer, but clearly something should be done.“
Do you agree with what Jon Anik had to say?
