Erling Haaland could have represented the three lions in the World Cup: But here is why he chose Norway over England

If Erling Haaland had initially chosen to represent his natal country, he would very well have been donning an England jersey at this year’s World Cup in Qatar. Haaland would have initially been qualified to represent England if he had so desired. He was born in Leeds during his father Alf-time Inge’s time at Elland Road.

However, the talented Manchester City forward claims that choosing Norway was simply ‘natural’ for him to do so given that his family moved to Bryne when he was just three years old.

“I lived in Norway for such a long time and I lived here [England] for three and a half or four years, so it was logical for me to select Norway,” Haaland told Goal.

‘You never know how it would be if maybe my father played longer in England or whatever, maybe I would be English, I don’t know. But yeah, I’m Norwegian and I’m proud of it.’

What if Erling Haaland played for the England National Team?

The 2018 World Cup will not feature Haaland, who has 21 goals in 23 appearances for Norway, since the Scandinavian nation failed to advance from their individual qualifying group. It is a painful shame for a player who is currently regarded as the best on the planet due to his incredible performance for City this season.

Since having joined Pep Guardiola‘s team in the summer, the 22-year-old has dominated English football, tallying an astounding 23 goals in 17 games.

He is currently on track to break a number of Premier League scoring records. Haaland will however have to observe as a number of his City teammates travel to Qatar to compete in this year’s World Cup.
