Newcastle United faced Sunderland in over 7 years in the recent round of the FA Cup. The two teams share a rivalry that dates back to the start of the 20th century. It is an extension of the English Civil War, where the towns of Newcastle and Sunderland had different political ideologies.
The last time they faced was in March 2016, when it finished with a draw. Now it looked like it was an easy win for the hosts, Newcastle United, due to the huge difference in quality. And that’s exactly what happened, with Newcastle running away with a 3-0 win.
During the match, Trai Hume had trouble containing Anthony Gordon, with the winger playing around the fullback. In frustration, he tried pulling his shirt to stop the 22-year-old. Instead, he tore it. After he received a replacement shirt, he told Hume if he wanted his shirt, he could give it after the match.
A brace by Alexander Isak and an own goal by Daniel Ballard ensured Newcastle moved to the Round of 32 in the FA Cup. They will now face Manchester City in the Premier League on 13th January, and following that is a trip to Birmingham to play Aston Villa. They currently are 9th in the league.
The Tyne-Wear Derby!
The origin of the rivalry between Newcastle United and Sunderland dates to the mid-1600s, during the English Civil War. The basis of the war was to decide if the British government would follow a parliamentarian or a royalist form. Newcastle supported the Royalists, while Sunderland opposed them.
Although they first played against each other in 1883, the two teams started a rivalry in 1900. Things started picking up in the next few years, with the fans getting more violent with each other. In the 1901 Good Friday fixture between the two, the interest in the match peaked. Then the St. James’ Park could just hold up to 30k fans, but over 120k fans showed up. A riot ensued, with only 25 police officers unable to control them. The match was canceled and the home fans blamed the Sunderland fans, for attacking them.
Since then, there has been a history of hooliganism between both fans, with clashes and brawls breaking out between the two clubs more than regularly. Hooliganism saw a rise during the 1970s, with fans being fatally injured at times. During one of those regular pre-match clashes in 2013, over 156 fans were arrested. One of the most iconic moments of those fans came when one Newcastle fan tried to punch a police horse after a 3-0 loss to Sunderland in 2013. After their FA Cup clash, the police thanked both sets of fans for one of the most peaceful Tyne-Wear Derbies, despite the small number of fights.
The two teams have played each other 157 times. The majority of them have finished in draws, but Newcastle United have more wins, with 54. The Magpies are also the more successful club, with 11 trophies, compared to Sunderland’s 9. But Sunderland were the last team to win a major trophy, with Sunderland winning the FA Cup in 1973.
