In September 2022, global fast food chain KFC France contemplated taking legal action against French star footballer Kylian Mbappe. The disagreement arose when Mbappe refused to participate in a photo session and endorse promotional events for KFC. He stated his unwillingness to support brands like fast food chains and gambling companies that he lacked belief in.
This situation caused a rift between Mbappe and the French Football Federation (FFF). The FFF indicated that they might review the agreement regarding image rights with the players, but no changes were made at that time. As a sponsor of the French national team, KFC had already compensated for using Mbappe’s likeness.
Alain Beral, vice president of KFC France, emphasized that the company expected the agreed-upon terms to be honored and mentioned their willingness to assert their rights if necessary. This standoff highlighted the growing influence of soccer players in sponsorships. Players like Mbappe, with their significant social media followings and marketability, could secure endorsement deals worth millions.
Whether KFC would proceed with legal action against Mbappe remained uncertain. However, this threat put the player in a challenging position. He had to decide whether to yield and endorse KFC or risk a damaging lawsuit that could harm his reputation.
“We have paid for something clear. If necessary, we will assert our rights,” said Alain Beral, vice president of KFC France.
