Erik ten Hag opens up on Harry Maguire
Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, had a change of heart regarding Harry Maguire’s position on the field. Maguire, the club’s former captain, started in a left-sided central defensive role during the EFL Cup victory against Crystal Palace, marking a notable shift from Ten Hag’s previous stance just six months ago.
The decision to place Maguire in the left-sided central defensive position appeared fruitful. He forged a strong partnership with Raphael Varane, who held the right-sided role. In contrast, the prior season saw Maguire’s favored left-sided center-back position usurped by Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw. The latter predominantly functions as a left-back. Additionally, Victor Lindelof had often been chosen over Maguire for this position.
This change had led to Maguire’s exclusion from ten Hag’s preferred starting defensive lineup, with Varane securing the right-sided role. In Tuesday night’s match against Crystal Palace, the partnership between Maguire and Varane appeared solid, highlighting the manager’s tactical adjustment.
