Hull City starlet Jaden Philogene just netted one of the most spectacular goals of 2024 against Rotherham United on Wednesday. The midfielder set football Twitter on fire as his magnificent rabona goal had fans dumbfounded and questioning his ‘audacity’ to pull such a move. His goal, which was unfortunately labeled as an own goal, saw him put the Rotherham defense on skates.
Philogene is a midfielder, who can also operate as a winger. The 22-year-old made the move from Aston Villa in January of last year, where he rose through the ranks in their academy. His spell at Hull City has been worthy of praise, with his 7 goals and 5 assists in 17 games speaking for itself. Speaking for the goal itself, Philogene made his way through the right flank, before a quick nutmeg on the Rotherham left-back.

He then cut inside as he sent the defender sliding aimlessly to his right. Then came the moment of disbelief, as he set himself up for an audacious rabona. His ‘flick’ took a deflection from Cameron Humphreys, who directed the ball past the keeper and hit the post before going into the back of the net. In spite of him conjuring up an irrefutable Puskas Award candidate, maybe the biggest injustice is that it was awarded as an own goal.
Fans react to Jaden Philogene’s unbelievable ‘goal’
Even though Jaden Philogene‘s magical moment went down as their own goal, the internet certainly took notice of his efforts. A fan in disbelief questioned his ‘audacity’ to even attempt such a flick, let alone score from it. Another added that it was the easiest choice for the Puskas Award and that it being awarded as an own goal was equal to ‘robbing’ him.
Others jokingly called his attempt as disrespectful to Rotherham and that their defense would be ashamed to concede a goal in such fashion. Some even asked Chelsea owner and billionaire Todd Boehly to bring him in next season. Despite the resounding praise for his efforts, some remained unconvinced. A few pointed to the crucial deflection from the Rotherham defender and argued that if not for the same, it would’ve ended in a wayward cross.
What adds to Philogene’s merit is that the winger attempted the same while his team was trailing by a goal to nil in the 71st minute of the game. Building on the momentum, Hull City quickly bagged another through Noah Ohio to steal all three points on the night.
