The 2022 World Cup will be Salima Mukansanga’s second significant men’s international competition in less than a year. Early in the year, Salima Mukansanga officiated the first game as a female referee at the Africa Cup of Nations.
As Zimbabwe faced Guinea in the group stage of the January Africa Cup of Nations, Mukansanga from Rwanda was in charge of an all-female refereeing squad.

Yoshimi Yamashita, a Japanese referee, was the first female official to officiate an AFC Champions League game previously this year. Although in a separate continent, Japanese official Yamashita has also contributed to Champions League history.
There are three female assistant referees out of the 69 that have been called up. They are Kathryn Nesbitt from the United States, Karen Diaz Medina from Mexico, and Neuza Back from Brazil.
