Carli Lloyd scores 5 goals as USWNT trashed Paraguay 9-0

USA Women’s National Team scored nine goals in their recent friendly match against Paraguay in Cleveland. USWNT legend Carli Lloyd scored a career high of five goals in a single game against the No.50 ranked Paraguay.

The five goals scored by the 39 year old Lloyd were a personal best and took her career total to 133 career international goals, the fourth all-time in the history of the women’s game. The match was the first of her final four games after the USWNT forward announced that she would be retiring at the end of the team’s four-match post-Olympic tour.

Carli Lloyd played the full match, scoring her first two goals inside the opening six minutes a header from a corner kick and an easy finish in front of the goal. Andi Sullivan then added a brace scoring in each half and both of her goals coming from set piece. Lynn Williams and substitute Tobin Heath rounded out the scoring in what was a field day for them against Paraguay.

“It was fun. I’m just trying to savor it. I want time to go slower. One game is down and I have three left,” Lloyd told ESPN after the match. “I was feeling a little uncomfortable that I had all the goals on the team. I said someone else needs to score.” she added.

Llyod further added when asked if she was aware of a single game record for a U.S player she said”One of the coaches did mention it as we went back on after halftime, I was just halving fun out there and I didn’t want to lose the ball.”

“She’s an absolute legend” says USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski about Carli Lloyd

She’s an absolute legend, just being on the field, she’s a threat, no matter who we play, when we play, where we play,” Vlatko Andonovski said. “Her mentality is something that’s unseen. She’s just hungry for scoring goals, just hungry to get better, and whether we play for a medal or we play Paraguay, it makes no difference. She wants to score goals.” he added.

Lloyd’s scoring five goals against Paraguay were similar to the 2015 World Cup final, when she scored three goals in the first 16 minutes against Japan. It was her first career five-goal game. She has nine career hat tricks, one fewer than Mia Hamm.

USWNT take on Paraguay in another friendly on 21st September and will look to having a similar result and of course Carli Lloyd will look to add more goals to her tally before she retires from the U.S Women’s National team.
