Shocking! Champions League draw rendered void after Villarreal vs Manchester United fiasco; to be conducted again
The recently concluded UEFA Champions League draw will not stand, and the draw will be performed yet again after it emerged that a technical glitch had been made by the draw holders in the previously held draw event earlier today in Nyom, Switzerland. The Champions League draw gave up certain interesting matchups with none bigger than Manchester United and Paris Saint Germain set to face each other in February.
As things stand those fixtures have been scrapped off and a fresh Champions League draw will be conducted in a few hours’ time at the same venue, to clear all technical faults related to the draw.
The Champions League draws created plenty of controversy due to a technical error during the proceedings
The trouble was created after Manchester United were drawn out of the pots while choosing opponents for Spanish club Villarreal. This should not have been the case given that the two clubs had already played in the same group during the group stages.
Manchester United were in the midst of the controversy once again, when their name wasn’t even placed while selecting opponents for another Spanish club Atletico Madrid, who qualified as the second-placed team from their group and could have been potential opponents for United.
Giorgio Marchetti, who is UEFA’s deputy general secretary was present in person while the draws were being conducted and agreed to the technical glitches during the live stream itself, even sparking more fury among the fans and the clubs who felt hard done by the draws made.
In a statement released later on, UEFA owned up to the mistake on their part, confirming that the draws made have been declared null and void and it will be completely redone at 15:00 CET or 19.30 IST.
