Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK Government earlier today amid the Ukraine-Russia crisis that has been going on for the past few days. The Russian businessman had been the owner of the English club since 2003 and was played a crucial part in getting Chelsea to the top.
Earlier this week, Abramovich announced that he was willing to sell Chelsea after it was reported that the businessman has ties with the Russian President Vladimir Putin. The UK Government have announced in their latest sanctions that Roman Abramovich has had his assets frozen in the UK and a travel ban has been imposed on the 55 year old.
This puts Chelsea in deep trouble as the Blues are now banned from offering new contract to players or staff, conducting any official transfer business, selling new tickets to any games for any of their teams, including the women’s team and the junior teams, selling merchandise to fans, no stadium redevelopment, spending over 500,000 pounds on security and stewarding per home match and over 20,000 pounds as expenses in away games.
Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger heading for exit after owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned:
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the UK Government earlier today after it was reported that the 55 year old has ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This has put a great dent in the long-term and short-term goals of the club, with important players like Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger set to leave the club.
The biggest loss for Chelsea will be if Antonio Rudiger leaves the club. The 29 year old has been a key member for the Blues and has revived his career at Chelsea after Thomas Tuchel took charge. Rudiger joined Chelsea from AS Roma in the summer of 2017 and did not have the best of starts at the English club.
Rudiger was very inconsistent with in his first few years after joining but since Thomas Tuchel took charge, the 29 year old quickly turned himself into one of the best defenders in the world. Antonio Rudiger’s contract expires in the summer and Chelsea wanted to extend his contract, but that looks very tough after Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK Government earlier today.
Antonio Rudiger is approaching 200 appearances for the Blues and played a major role in helping them win the FA Cup, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. The German international is linked with Manchester United, FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
“Chelsea is in limbo”- Famous journalist Kaveh Solhekol gives verdict on the club’s future:
Famous English journalist Kaveh Solhekol gave an honest and brutal verdict on Chelsea after the club is looking for a new owner amid Ukraine-Russia war. The Sky Sports journalist explained how Chelsea will suffer and what problems the club could face.
Kaveh Solhekol said,” The sale is on hold for the time being. Roman Abramovich will not be able to sell Chelsea. From the beginning of this process, he’s been on the back foot, he’s not been in control of this situation- the government has. He came up with the scheme to hand over control but not ownership of the club to the trustees of the Chelsea Foundation.”
The Sky Sports Journalist added,” That didn’t work, so he released a statement saying he wished to sell the club, and that all the proceeds would go to a new foundation that he would set up to help all victims of the war in Ukraine. But Chelsea is seen by the government as being a cultural asset, thereby they’ve been given a licence. They can carry on operating and play the fixtures.”
“They are in limbo. There are lot of things they can’t do. They can carry on paying their players, but they will not be able to make new signings. They can’t sell tickets for games, so only season ticket holders can go. They won’t be able to make any money from merchandise. They’ll be able to carry on paying their players. Things are very uncertain in the long-term,” said Kaveh Solhekol.
