Ever since ‘The King’ has been reported to make a significant return to Old Trafford, the only thing any football fanatic could think upon his Cristiano Ronaldo’s jersey number at Manchester United. The iconic number 7 Portuguese talisman has finally made his way into Manchester United after a 12-year separation. However, will he be wearing the number 7 jersey once again or will it be Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani to continue his tenure at the Red Devils with number 7? Remains to be the talking point.
The problem with Ronaldo getting his hands up to the number 7 jersey seems to be caused by the Premier League rules which were drafted some time back. Those who are not aware, according to Section M of the rule book relating to players’ identification and stripes states, “Before the commencement of each season each club shall allocate a different shirt number to each member of its first team squad. A club shall likewise allocate a shirt number to any player joining its first team squad during the season.”

This above stated rule suggests that as the 2021-22 season has begun, it is Cavani who has started the season dawning the #7-jersey. And while he remains at the club, he shall be retaining his jersey number at all costs. Only if he leaves in this transfer window, then can Ronaldo fetch back his iconic number 7 at Old Trafford.
However, Rio Ferdinand who is a club legend earlier had just said on his FIVE YouTube podcast, “Just to think Cavani could be the back-up for Ronaldo, it’s unbelievable. Cavani, I have to say, what a man. He saw who was coming to town and gave up the No.7 shirt.”
Having said that, as things stands according to the rules, it looks like Ronaldo is the player who has to start his homecoming dawning the No.28 jersey as Cavani shall not be allowed to wear a different number upon his back. But as the speculations round up, all questions shall be answered when ‘the King’ arrives in Manchester in the coming days.
