Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire in new Manchester United rift as crisis continues for interim manager Ralf Rangnick

It seems that Manchester United struggles are never ending this season with Cristiano Ronaldo and defender Harry Maguire are entangled in a power struggled over the captaincy. In the last couple of days Ralf Rangnick was quick to back Harry Maguire despite some poor performances and the defender himself is reluctant to relinquish the armband for the rest of the season as he fears that loss of form may result in losing the captaincy permanently.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick wants Cristiano Ronaldo to mentor the young players in the squad and the influence of the 37-year old in the dressing room has not gone down well with Maguire. It has made the defender feel marginalised in terms of authority in the dressing room. Reports suggests that it is inevitable that Ronaldo will replace Harry Maguire as the defender continue to struggle for form this season.

Rangnick’s decision of Ronaldo guiding the young players in the squad like Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay have been seen as a direct challenge to Harry Maguire’s as skipper. The youngster are said to be in a dilemma feeling they should remain loyal to Maguire, as captain, despite Ronaldo’s huge presence and influence within the dressing-room.

Cristiano Ronaldo was backing Maguire as captain in the start, however that has changed over the time and Ronaldo’s increasing influence in the dressing room. A source close to Manchester United said: “Originally, Ronaldo was asking players to back Harry. But the problem is the manager now wants Ronaldo to mentor all these younger players. That’s left Harry in no man’s land, as he’s the captain and having to say and follow whatever Ronaldo says, to keep everything sweet.”
