Mendy started playing in the Le Havre academy before signing his professional contract with third division team Cherbourg in 2011. However he was released in 2014 and he was unemployed for a year and started looking for jobs.

His friend and former teammate Ted Lavie helped him to sign as the fourth keeper for Marseille and Mendy spent the whole season keeping for the reserve team.

Mendy then moved to Reims in 2016-17 Ligue 2 season in search of regular playing time. His debut came on the opening day of the season when the first choice goalkeeper Johann Carrasso was sent off just five minutes into the game. He then went on to keep three clean sheets in the next 7 games for Reims.

In 2017-18 Mendy was the first choice goalkeeper and helped Reims win the Ligue 2 title and hence securing a promotion to Ligue 1.

He kept 18 clean sheets in 34 games in their first season in French top tier football.

Mendy then moved to Rennes in 2019 for an undisclosed fee in a region of €4 million.

He kept nine clean sheets in 24 games in season which was concluded early due to COVID-19 pandemic. Rennes finished 3rd and qualified for UEFA Champions League.

In September 2020 Chelsea signed Mendy for a fee of £22 million euros signing a five year contract. Mendy became the first keeper to keep three clean sheets in his first three premier league appearances for Chelsea since Petr Cech in 2004.

Mendy helped Chelsea to win the UEFA Champions League in his first season at the club and also won the UEFA men’s best goalkeeper award for the 2020/21 season.

Mendy joined up with the Guinea-Bissau in honour of his father but later switched to Senegal where he was the first choice goalkeeper at the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
