WATCH: Goal or Not? Emile Smith Rowe scores for Arsenal with Manchester United’s goalkeeper down
The high profile midweek fixture between two of Premier League’s biggest giants, Manchester United and Arsenal is underway at Old Trafford and boy has it lived up to its reputation right from the first minute of the match. Arsenal have taken a 1-0 lead through Emile Smith Rowe’s controversial strike in the 13th minute.
The Gunners started the match on the front foot, and have made their domination pay eventually with Smith Rowe taking advantage of Fred and David De Gea’s internal mutiny right inside the penalty box. The away side managed 4 corners inside the first 15 minutes and pounced on the last of them as Martin Odegaard flew in the cross from the dead-ball situation.
Manchester United have shot themselves in the foot conceding the early goal from a comedy of errors
The cross was cleared away by United skipper Harry Maguire, however, the problem had just started for Manchester United. Inside the six-yard box, David De Gea went down immediately, but play continued and the ball reached Emile Smith Rowe on the edge of the penalty area.
The youngster carried on the play, and shot a first time effort, sending it into the goal while David De Gea lay on the ground anticipating a foul to be given for his side. United players started protesting the goal and play was halted for a couple of minutes, as VAR intervened after seeing it was Manchester United‘s Fred who had collided with David De Gea, meaning it wasn’t a foul for United.
The referee, Martin Atkinson, appeared to have taken the whistle into his mouth while the shot was struck, but blew it only after the ball had crossed the net. Chris Kavanagh, the VAR referee allowed the goal to stand and the home side fins themselves 1-0 down after 35 minutes.
