Everything you need to know about the first female referee to officiate a game for a team from Serie A
Italian football made history last night as Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi became the first female referee to managed a top flight team from Italian Serie A. Maria Caputi is a 31 year old from Livorno and has ample of experience from Serie B, however yesterday she got the chance to become the referee in a game which included a Serie A team in the Coppa Italia where Cagliari were up against Cittadella at the Sardegna Arena.
The game ended in a 3-1 win for Cagliari with Allessandro Deiola, Damir Ceter and Gaston Pereiro each scored a goal and secured their place in the fourth round of Coppa Italia. It was an eventful match for Maria Caputi as she showed 3 yellow cards and had a goal cancelled correctly after a VAR review and was always close to the action.
The president of Italian referee association Alfredo Trentalange had nothing but high praise after Maria Caputi made history. The 31 year-old has great confidence while officiating a game as she smiles and have the ability to control a situation in game when the tension between the players are growing keeping herself calm and composed with every decision.
“I can only be proud of her, because she represents the growth of a strong movement, the female one, which is realizing a dream of civilization, with application, commitment and passion.” said Alfredo Trentalange.
Is female referee like Maria Caputi way to go forward in future with the fixture congestion across Europe ?
Female referees will surely bring a new change and also a new dynamic in the world of football and given the amount of games played across the top five leagues and also the European competition it may be the best solution to tackle the fixture congestion.
