Four times Jose Mourinho called his players ‘Mentally Weak’

Jose Mourinho is one of the greatest footballing brains that the game has seen. From winning the UEFA Champions League title with Porto to building a title winning side with Inter, Jose Mourinho has done it all. He also challenged the legendary Premier League managers, Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson and won titles under their noses with Chelsea. However, the second decade of the 21st century has not been kind enough to him.

The reason why I stated as above is because of the sackings that he went through. He was sacked thrice in the decade by three of the Premier League clubs. He was sacked by Chelsea during his second spell, by Manchester United after having a dismal start to the season and by Tottenham Hotspur.

All these sackings had one thing in common. He called his players mentally weak. And now, he has called again the Roma players weak as they failed to defend the three goal lead that they had. Not only their defense was weak but they lost it poorly to Juventus in the dying embers.

The dialogue came after Chelsea decided to part ways with the manager. He was appointed for the second time and they even won the title. However, in the second spell also, the players did not live up the hype and let him down. Angry at them, he said:

“Some of them need to rethink how they live Chelsea, they live football, they live their job’
Yes, I feel frustrated with some players and I feel that some others give absolutely everything and don't deserve to lose

At Manchester United:

With Manchester United, he had a love and hate story. Before he was asked to manage the side, he was a staunch rival. However, as he was handed the managerial keys, the Portuguese started to make crucial decisions and became the most successful manager post Sir Alex era. However, in his third season, the players let him down and they crumbled under the pressure. In one of the press conferences after the draw against relegation fodder Hull City, he said:

I didn’t know that some players need time to live with this (being a United player), because it must be part of your natural habitat ‘Play to win, responsibility to win, cope with the pressure to win.

This is something that has to belong to your natural habitat. For some guys, it doesn’t. ‘They also need that time to go out of their comfort zone or a zone where they are protected that we assume the objective is not to win – that also takes time.

At Tottenham Hotspur

Jose showed to the whole world what he can do when he has the two best players at this disposal. He created a strong pairing of Harry Kane and Son that scored goals for fun. However, that went down the hill as season progressed. His “mentally weak” set of comments came after the team conceded three goals against West Ham United and allowed them to draw against Spurs. All three goals came after the 80th minute in the game. In the post match, he said:

It was exactly when we were in control that we conceded the first and their belief went up. My guys were not strong enough to cope with it psychologically. The last few seconds we lost two points.
I don't know if it was us inviting them or with them with the extra motivation of getting in the game. I can't identify us or them, maybe both

At Roma:

This game was there for Roma to take all three points. However, the team decided to bottle in the final 20 minutes after going three goals up. The Portuguese was unhappy at the end. Not only he bashed his players but applauded the mentality of Juventus players to stage a comeback.

When we allowed them back in for 3-2, a team with a strong mentality like Juventus, a strong character. The fear set in. A psychological complex. It's not a problem for me having 3-2, it's a problem for them.

For my team. At the end of the day, when you're in the s***, you get back on your feet and find your character. But there are people in this locker room who are a bit too nice, a bit too weak
