Has any Premier League club done the Treble?

The Blue half of Manchester is in contention for the achievement this season.

Has any Premier League club done the Treble?

Following their recent victory over Arsenal, Manchester City look increasingly likely to win their third consecutive Premier League title. The CItyzens are also scheduled to face rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup Final and also have to take on Real Madrid in the UCL Semi-Final. A treble seems on the cards for the cityzens this season. This begs the question, has any Premier League club ever won the treble?

To date, there have been nine sides that have ever won the treble. The treble includes winning the domestic league and cup, and the UEFA Champions League in the same season. FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich have both won the Treble twice and a sextuple (six trophies in one campaign) in 2009 and 2020 respectively.

There has been one English team to have won the treble, and it is none other than City’s greatest-ever rivals. Manchester United completed this historic achievement in 1999, in spectacular fashion. The Red Devils won the Premier League by a single point, won the FA Cup against Newcastle after a masterful strike by Ryan Giggs against Arsenal in the Semi-Finals.

The historic feat was capped off with the Champions League victory in the final minute. Substitute and former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won the game for the Manchester club after the club was initially down by a goal. Teddy Sheringham scored in the first minute of stoppage time and Solskjaer completed the comeback in the 93rd minute to win the club the Champions League title.

Manchester City could match their biggest rivals’ greatest achievement this season. Should they manage to secure the treble, Pep Guardiola might end up moving on. The Spanish manager had claimed that his work at Manchester would not be complete without a European trophy, and finally achieving that could complete City boss’ time at the club.

Mikel Arteta was questioned on his team’s title chances after Arsenal lost their “title decider” against Manchester City. The London club failed to have much of an impact on the game, and City were destined to run out winners after the first kick of the game.

When asked whether Arsenal need to win all five games to have a chance of winning the title, Arteta responded,” I don’t know what is going to be required. For sure what we have to do a first is lift the players are up. Because they suffered tonight and it was a difficult one to swallow.”

The manager was also asked about OPTA rating Manchester CIty’s title chances at 92%. The Spaniard replied, “I cannot fully understand because the stats say at the start of the season Arsenal was going to finish 6th or 7th. We are where we are with five games to go.” Arteta continued, “I’ve been almost 22 years in this country, I’ve seen a lot of things and I know how much it shifts from game to game. They are not two equal games in this league.”

It seems that Arteta’s men will not bow down so easily. The Gunners will be ready to display the characteristics that took them to the top of the league this season. Despite City’s possible four-point advantage, anything could happen in the remaining matches to change the course of the title race.
