How can Napoli win their first Serie A title since 1990 next weekend against Udinese?

Napoli were all but set to lift their first Scudetto in 33 years. However, Boulaye Dia’s equaliser has forced the Gli Azzurri to wait that little bit longer. Napoli will need to go again next week if they are to win the title this season.

Napoli probably had the champagne on ice before their match even kicked off. The Naples side knew that anything less than three points from Lazio would mean that they could secure the title this week. However, Napoli failed to win at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium against Salernitana, thanks to the strike from Dia.

The club are still 18 points clear at the table and a single point against Udinese will see them clinch the title. The Italian side have the remaining six matches to secure the top spot, and that is considering the possibility of Lazio not dropping points during those matches.

Lazio will take on Sassuolo before Napoli play this match week. Should the Biancocelesti drop points again, the Naples side would be crowned the Champions. However, Sassuolo are an unpredictable bunch, and the title would likely fall into Napoli’s hands again. The celebrations are to soon begin, the only question is when exactly.

Napoli last won the Serie A Title in 1990. The Gli Azzurri were led by the Argentine great, Diego Maradona. El Pelusa had been one of the best players in Europe for the past five years and was the star of the Napoli show that campaign.

The Serie A worked a little differently back then. A win would award the victors with two points instead of three and a draw would award the same single point. The Italian league was the most respected league back in the 90s too. With players like Paolo Maldini, Marco Van Basten and Roberto Baggio, the league was studded with some of the greatest icons of the generation.

This did not detriment the Naples side, who managed to win their second league title in three years. The 89-90 season was especially successful for Italian sides, with AC Milan lifting the European Cup, Sampdoria winning the Cup Winners’ Cup and Juventus winning the UEFA Cup.

Diego Maradona’s brilliance helped the Gli Azzurri win the league title by two points. The Argentine was honoured for his achievements with the club, which named the Stadium after the legend following his death in 2020. Maradona’s time in Italy is regarded with some of the most beautiful football witnessed by the country in the century.
