How many Copa del Rey titles have Real Madrid won?

Real Madrid thrashed Barcelona 4-0 in the second leg of the Copa del Ray semifinals. While the first half looked equally matched, Los Blancos looked more lively and dominating than their opponents. A Vinicius Jr goal which Jules Kounde failed to clear from the line despite getting a touch along with a Karim Benzema hattrick sealed the victory for the visitors.

Real Madrid is arguably one of the best clubs in the world. The club’s investments in world-class players and desire for success make them a nightmare for opposition teams. The club dominates the Champions League and La Liga trophy stats having won the most in football history. Barcelona, their biggest rival has competed along with them for silverware and remains one of their toughest opponents. The club has won literally every competition in the football world.

They are the reigning champions of Europe and the Spanish top flight along with the Supercopa de Espana winning the treble in the 2021-22 season. However, they haven’t had much luck this season as their arch-rivals look more dominating than ever having already acquired the Spanish Super Cup and are on course to win La Liga. Nevertheless, they progressed to the final of the Copa del Ray where they will face Osasuna after thrashing Barcelona.

What is the Copa del Ray competition?

It is an annual knockout football competition in Spanish football, organized by the Royal Spanish Football Federation. It is considered one of the most prestigious national cup trophies in the world. Copa del Rey winners qualify for the following season’s UEFA Europa League. If they have already qualified for Europe through their league position, then the Europa League spot is given to the highest-placed team in the league that has not yet qualified.

The competition was founded in 1903, thus making it the oldest Spanish football competition played at a national level. Barcelona is the most successful club in the competition, having won 31 Spanish Cup titles. Athletic Club has the second-most titles with 23, while Real Madrid is third with 19. Real Betis is the most recent winner, having defeated Valencia in the 2022 final.

One competition that hasn’t been kind to Real Madrid is the Copa del Rey. They’ve won it 19 times, which seems decent but are not even in the top two in domestic cup honors. They sit third, well adrift of Barcelona and languishing behind Athletic Club. They may have shifted their interests elsewhere because they clearly have a squad that can win the competitions that is not as challenging compared to Madrid’s previous honors.

Real Madrid hasn’t won the Copa del Rey in nine years. They’ve won it just twice in the 21st century and five times in the last 40 years. Real Zaragoza, Real Betis and Espanyol have all lifted the trophy as often as Los Blancos since 2000. They have struggled even in the Spanish Supercup, another domestic competition losing out to Barcelona by just two trophies.

Real Madrid last won the Copa del Rey in the 2013-14 season, when they defeated Barcelona in the final at Mestalla in Valencia. Gareth Bale’s iconic run off the pitch and around Marc Bartra, which came with just five minutes left to play sealed the victory for Los Blancos. That season culminated in a Champions League and Copa del Rey double for Los Blancos for the only time in their history.

They are now on course to win another after thrashing Barcelona in the second leg of the Copa del Ray semifinal coming from a one-goal deficit in the first leg and progressing to the finals where they face Osasuna on 6th May. Real Madrid will secure their 20th title in the competition if they are to win which is still way off Barcelona and Osasuna will be aiming for their first-ever trophy in club history if they can cause an upset.
