“How should we compete in a title race”- Thomas Tuchel drops out of the race for the Premier League title
Chelsea played Brighton at the Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night and once again dropped points after a 1-1 draw falling further behind in the title race this season. Romelu Lukaku gave the blues the lead in the first half from a corner kick, but the Seagulls managed to equalised in the 92nd minute through the former Arsenal and Manchester United man Danny Welbeck in a game in which Brighton gave their everything and deserved nothing less then a point.
However Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was not happy about a number of things in his post-match press conference starting with festive period fixture congestion with Chelsea’s squad already being depleted through COVID-19 and injuries while Reece James and Andreas Christensen adding their name to the list against Brighton.
“How should we be in it? We have seven Covid cases. We have five or six players out for six or more weeks. How should we compete in a title race?”
Tuchel further added ”Everyone else who has a full squad, everybody in training has the full power to come through this league. We would be stupid to think we can do it out of Covid and injuries. Just play and everybody would be stupid to do it without 23 fit players.”
There has been a significant dip in form for Tuchel’s men since their 1-1 draw against Manchester United back in November. Chelsea now trail Manchester City by 8 points at the top, and Thomas Tuchel says that how can Chelsea compete for the title with so many players out injured and few others due to COVID-19.
“We have VAR to check”- Thomas Tuchel fumes at the referees decisions in Chelsea’s game against Brighton
Thomas Tuchel also took aim at referee Mike Dean for not letting the decision go to VAR and blowing the whistle even before the ball is in the back of the net.
“The ball is going into the net, why does he need to whistle before the ball is over the line? Why? We have VAR to check, why can we not wait? If he decides then it is a foul then decide it but why is he so sure? Does he want to keep the tension up? The penalty is a joke, honestly a joke, not to interfere from VAR.” Tuchel said.
Chelsea take on Liverpool on Sunday 2nd January in what will be a crucial match for both teams as they are chasing City at the top and will look to cut the gap.
