Jurgen Klopp thrilled with Harvey Elliot’s goal against Cardiff to mark “fairytale comeback” for youngster
Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp could not be happier for his prodigious midfield talent, Harvey Elliot, after the midfielder scored a wonder goal on his comeback to the pitch. Elliot had suffered a horrendous injury against Leeds in September and had to be stretchered off the pitch, in what looked like a season-ending injury.
However, the youngster made a speedy recovery and made his first appearance after the lengthy break against Cardiff City in the FA Cup fourth-round tie. With Liverpool winning 1-0, Klopp called Harvey Elliot on the pitch and he repaid his manager’s faith in him by expertly scoring the third goal from a volley.
Harvey Elliot returned to action after 4 months due to a devastating injury he suffered against Leeds in the Premier League
The performance from Harvey Elliot was extremely commendable given the fact that he was out of action for such a long time. Injuries of this nature can be very difficult to shake off and often takes players a long time to get back to their level best, but Elliot seems to have started brilliantly.
Klopp praised Elliot for his continued struggle during the recovery phase which led to his speedy recovery. The German boss hailed it as a proper fairytale and also acknowledged that Elliot’s injury earlier in the season was one of the toughest times he has gone through in his career.
“Coming on is a great step back, scoring the goal makes it a proper fairytale,” Jurgen Klopp said. “Harvey Elliott’s goal was very touching. I have known him for a while now, I know what an incredible talent he is and an incredible kid he is. When we lost him at Leeds, it was one of the hardest moments of my career.”
Klopp praised Elliott, 18, for the attitude he has shown during his comeback, adding: “There are so many things to do in this long period, you can do a lot of wrong things and luckily he did a lot right. He is still a fearless boy and a great footballer. When you are that young you deal with it better. Even on the first day, he was pretty much on the way back.
“Probably his biggest talent is how ready he is mentally for all the things out there. He is a kid but on the pitch not so much. He was buzzing and waiting for this moment. When he got the injury, I saw him two days later at the training ground and I was in a worse mood than he was. He was saying, ‘Come on, boss, head up.’ He is an exceptional talent in a lot of departments.”
Harvey Elliot will only hope that he stays injury-free and can produce the goods for Liverpool during the remaining months of the season to help his side close the gap on Manchester City in the league and contribute to their chances of winning in Europe and the other Cup competitions.
