Leicester City’s 2015-16 Premier League winning captain, Wes Morgan has announced his retirement at the end of this season. The 37-year old defender recently won the FA Cup with Leicester and was out of contract in summer.

He has spent nine years at the club in a career spanning over 750 professional game across the top four divisions of English football. Wes Morgan went on to win the Championship and FA Cup but most famously guided his team to Premier League glory against 5000-1 odds for the first time in the club’s history. Morgan featured in all 38 Premier League games and played every minute en-route to the title.

The 30-capped Jamaica international won the club’s Player of the Season award in his first full campaign, and was also named in three Championship Team of the Year lists and the 2016 Premier League XI.

Leicester City chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: “Wes has been one of Leicester City’s greatest servants, leading the team through the Club’s most successful era and helping to set the standards that have pushed the Club forward.

“A big brother to everyone he has played with, a strong representative of the squad and a valuable source of counsel to managers and senior executives in the Club, his contribution has been enormous.

“Wes has shown throughout his Leicester City career that he has a great deal to offer away from the pitch. I’m excited to see how we can help him shape his career after football and how the Club can continue to benefit from his experience, knowledge and passion for the game.”

Wes Morgan thanked the fans and everyone at the club in his farewell speech after announcing his retirement.

“It’s been fantastic playing for the Foxes fans. I’ve had such a good time here. To come to Leicester has been one of my best choices. I can always look back on the memories. We’ve had some great times together. The fans have always been good to me. I always played my heart out for them.”

Morgan will go down as one of the greatest players in history for Leicester City, having been part of the club for 9 years and for his contributions towards the development of the club as a whole. His leadership skills are at par with some of the best in the world and we wish him a happy retirement.
