Ligue 1: Nice vs Marseille game abandoned after the fans threw bottles and invades the pitch
The match between OGC Nice vs Olympique de Marseille in Ligue 1 was abandoned after the home fans threw plastic bottles at the Marseille player Dimitri Payet, then stormed to the pitch after that breaking down one of the advertising board in doing.
The home fans targeted Marseille’s Dimitri Payet and threw plastic bottles at him whenever he went down to take corners for his side, the Marseille player launching one back at the crowd. This incident resulted in fans invading the pitch and attacking the player.
Seeing this, the two Marseille players Alvaro Gonzalez and Matteo Guendouzi came to the aid of their teammate running down towards the corner flag where this horrendous fight broke out. All this took place in the 75th minute of the match and Nice were leading the game 1-0 thanks to their Danish forward Kasper Dolberg.
“An inquiry is in progress, but no one is in police custody” said the public prosecutor’s office told Agence France-Presse on Monday morning after Sunday night incident at the Allianz Riviera.
Marseille players attacked by home crowd
Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli also lost his cool and needed the staff members to hold him down.
“Our players were attacked” said the Marseille President Pablo Longoria.
“The league wanted the match to restart. We decided for the safety of our players, who were attacked during the pitch invasion, not to resume because the safety of our players was not guaranteed.” He added.
This is not the first time the fans have caused trouble in the French Ligue 1. Marseille player Valentin Rongier was hit in the head by a plastic bottle in the opening game against Montpellier.
Nice players wanted the game to restart as they were leading but the Marseille players and referee Benoit Bastien thought otherwise and that resulted in suspending the game.
