Lionel Messi might have played his last match for FC Barcelona ; will miss their final league fixture against Eibar
A dejected Lionel Messi walks of a Barcelona defeat
FC Barcelona have announced that, Lionel Messi will miss Sunday’s trip to Eibar in the final match-day of the La Liga campaign. Barcelona are already out of the league title and the results of the final match would not have an impact on their final position this season.
Messi did not attend the training session with the rest of his teammates on the eve of their final fixture. Coach Ronald Koeman has allowed Lionel Messi to take an early holiday, meaning the Barcelona legend might have played his last game for the Catalan club amid uncertainty over his future.
Lionel Messi will take an early leave from Barcelona to rest for the upcoming Copa America tournament in June
Messi wanted to leave Barcelona last summer, but stayed back because of contractual complications. However, the Barcelona No.10 is out of contract this summer and has not signed a renewal with the club. Barcelona’s underwhelming recent results have also not gone down well with the ‘Little magician’ despite him scoring or assisting in every match.
Should Messi not sign a new contract then his final game for the club would be last weekend’s dismal 2-1 defeat at the Camp Nou to Celta Vigo. Messi has netted 30 times in La Liga this season and is set to win Spain’s Golden Boot – the Pichichi Trophy.
FC Barcelona’s statement confirming Lionel Messi’s early leave from the Spanish side read :
“Leo Messi has not trained on Friday with the coach’s permission and he will not be in the squad for the game against Eibar on Saturday. The striker can enjoy a rest before next month’s Copa América after a season in which he is one of the players in the squad who has played most.”
Manchester City have been touted as one of the leading candidates to sign him due to their financial strength and the presence of former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola. But Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be in the race as they hope to reunite him with his old team-mate Neymar.
Will Lionel Messi ultimately end up leaving Barcelona this summer? is the ultimate question all football fans are looking forward to in the upcoming summer transfer window. And if he does, then he has already played out his final game for the Blaugranas in his 17 year long association with the club.
