Lyon sign diminutive Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri on a €6m deal

Liverpool have finally parted ways with Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri this summer. French Ligue 1 outfit Lyon have signed Shaqiri in a €6 million permanent move.
The “Alpine Messi” signed a three-year contract at the French club after getting frustrated at the lack of minutes at Anfield in the past couple of seasons. Shaqiri started just 5 of the Reds’ games and made 14 appearances in all in the Premier League 2020/21 season.
Xherdan Shaqiri has signed a 3-year contract at Olympique Lyon

Shaqiri signed for the Reds from Stoke City in 2018, for a transfer fee of £13m and was largely used as a squad player as he failed to pin down a starting lineup spot for himself during his 3-year stay at the club. Despite not playing much, he had a successful spell at the club and won numerous titles including the Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup. Xherdan Shaqiri made a total of 63 appearances for the Reds in all competitions registering 8 goals.
“Olympique Lyonnais is pleased to have finally reached an agreement in principle with Liverpool for the transfer of the Swiss international midfielder, Xherdan Shaqiri,” a statement on Lyon’s website read after confirmation of the move.
Liverpool also confirmed the move a few moments later, thanking the player for his involvement with the club and also wishing him all the best for his future endeavors. The official statement read, “Shaqiri has today completed a permanent transfer to Lyon after three years with Liverpool. Everybody at Liverpool FC thanks Xherdan for his contributions over the past three seasons and wishes him the very best for the rest of his career.”
Jurgen Klopp’s side are highly unlikely to bring in a replacement signing for the Swiss Messi. Klopp has used 18-year old Harvey Elliot in a midfielder position, in the first two league matches and also has the option of using the likes of Thiago, Oxlade-Chamberlain among others as signing a midfielder looks far fetched ask for the club in the final days of the English transfer window.
