“Ole has taken the p**s”: Paul Ince bashes Solskjaer for giving Van de Beek just 10 minutes in Manchester Derby
Manchester United legend Paul Ince, in his latest interview with the United Stand, has questioned the Red Devils’ head coach – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s authority in treating their new singing Donny Van de Beek so poorly. He particularly pointed out that Ole bringing the youngster in for just 10 minutes in the Manchester Derby was extremely insulting and in his words, the Norwegian has ‘taken the piss’ out on Van de Beek.
The ‘Van de Beek Dilemma’
After much competition from FC Barcelona, Manchester United sealed a 5-year deal with Ajax’s star midfielder Donny Van de Beek back in September 2020, at a hefty transfer fee of $54 Million. Head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a great role to play in it as he reportedly promised the 24-year old a special role in the Playing XI. Contrary to his words, the Norwegian has rarely utilised the midfielder so far in his one year’s stay at the club. In Paul Ince’s words, Ole has simply ‘sold a dream’ to young Van de Beek and lured him into signing for United with fake promises.
Since his arrival at Manchester United, Donny Van de Beek has made it to the starting XI on just 4 occasions. The United fans are now sick and tired of questioning as to why the Dutchman is not being used to his fullest potential but in vain. However, after what Ole did with the youngster in the Manchester Derby, many fans, including Paul Ince himself, are furious at the manager.
When the Red Devils were losing 2-0 against their neighbours, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought in Van de Beek for Fred at the 80th minute mark, giving the boy just 10 minutes of game time – just 10 minutes to prove his worth.
What Paul Ince said
“Donny van de Beek gets four minutes against Atalanta. What worries me is the choices Ole makes,” the former Man United captain told The United Stand.
“This is what he said and Donny thought, ‘fck me, this is my dream, this is what I’ve been waiting for’. Two years down the line he’s on the bench. Ole’s actually taken the pss out of him.
“Not only has he taken the pss out of him, he gives him four minutes against Atalanta and then goes, ‘oh by the way, here’s your chance, go and have 10 minutes against Manchester City where we’ve not touched the ball for 85 minutes and show me what you can do’. “If I’m Donny van de Beek I would’ve said, ‘fck that, I’m not going on now, you want me to go on for 10 minutes when we haven’t touched the ball for 88 minutes?’. Now you’re taking the p*ss out of him even more.”
Thoughts on Jesse Lingard
Paul Ince feels that Jesse Lingard is subject to the same treatment by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as well.
“It’s decisions like that that baffle me, they really do. I don’t understand,” he started.
“He stopped Jesse Lingard from going to West Ham because he said he’ll be part of his team. You’re 2-0 down and you don’t bring him on.”
