WATCH: Marquinhos heads in the equaliser for PSG through Messi’s assist just before Halftime
Despite having a star-studded team, Paris Saint-Germain have been anything but the best team of Europe so far. The French giants are struggling not only in the Champions League but also against much smaller teams in the Ligue 1. They have already lost a Ligue 1 match against Rennes and are currently struggling in the ongoing match against St. Etienne as well.
PSG’s attacks looked synchronised at the beginning but after Neymar Jr. ‘s goal was denied by VAR, the Parisians lost momentum. The match got heated up when the match St. Etienne finally took a well deserved lead through Denis Bouanga in the 23rd minute. The VAR officials took way too long to give their verdict and when it finally went against PSG, the players were furious. However, the goal stood.
St. Etienne looked spot on but things took an unexpected turn moments before the halftime whistle. Mbappe broke free of his marker Timothée Kolodziejczak, and in an attempt to stop him, the defender dragged him by the knee seeing a direct red in the process. St. Etienne were then one man down for the rest of the game.
Watch: Marquinhos scores the equaliser
Things became even worse from them as PSG scored the equaliser through a set piece moments later. Lionel Messi’s free-kick was perfectly placed for PSG captain Marquinhos who placed the header brilliantly at the back of the net. This was Lionel Messi’s first assist of many more to come for Paris Saint Germain.
The Parisians are currently the table toppers of Ligue 1 and although the scoreline of this match will not affect their hopes of winning the league title, the fact that they are struggling against small teams despite having such a brilliant squad, is a concerning factor.
