A Norway Eliteserien match between Rosenborg and Lillestrom was abandoned when fans protested against VAR by throwing fishcakes, tennis balls, and smoke bombs onto the pitch.
From the moment the match began, fans expressed their frustration with VAR by throwing fishcakes. The protests forced the referee to halt the match while sending the players back to the locker room. Though the match eventually resumed, the protests escalated as fans hurled tennis balls and smoke bombs inside Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim. The match was halted four times in the first 30 minutes before being suspended, with the score at 0-0.
VAR has generated a lot of controversy since being introduced in the Eliteserien. Norwegian fan clubs have also complained that league matches are being compromised due to the excessive time referees spend making decisions with VAR. Moreover, fans have also pointed out that this affects the overall quality of the matches. However, the reason for throwing fishcakes, a traditional Norwegian food, as a form of protest over any other object remains unclear.

This isn’t the first time such an incident has occurred, as Lillestrom fans protested last month by throwing tennis balls onto the pitch during a match against KFUM Oslo. Additionally, English Premier League clubs and fans have similarly criticized VAR.
Manchester City and Norway star Oscar Bobb shines in pre-season friendly against Celtic
Manchester City suffered a 4-3 defeat to Scottish giants Celtic in a pre-season friendly, at the Kenan Memorial Stadium in North Carolina, USA. Despite the loss, Norwegian winger Oscar Bobb stood out and appeared ready to advance in his young career.
The 21-year-old forward scored one and set up City’s other two goals in their defeat. He was by far and away City’s best player last night, and appears ready for a bigger role in the EPL next season. Pep Guardiola’s squad is already filled with quality attacking options, and the young Norwegian could also assist fellow Norwegian Erling Haaland.
Bobb joined Manchester City’s youth team from Valerenga’s youth side and made 26 senior team appearances last season, scoring two goals. He made his EPL debut on September 2, 2023, against Fulham.
