Cristiano Ronaldo has time and again told the media of his conviction that the Saudi Pro League is better than certain other leagues in Europe. The superstar kicked off controversy when he confidently claimed in the past that the Saudi top flight was better than Ligue 1. His claim came at a time when Lionel Messi was playing for Paris Saint-Germain.

Reacting to the same, former French international and Chelsea legend Frank Leboeuf slammed the Portuguese. While many fans had reactions similar to that of the Frenchman’s, his comment took many by surprise.

It annoys me that Ronaldo says that the Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1. He made that comment on Ligue 1 and not the Portuguese league because Messi played in Ligue 1. I have respect for Ronaldo, but come on, just shut up! It's unfair to Ligue 1.

While Ronaldo’s move to Saudi forced a mass exodus of players to the league, positive things can also be said for Ligue 1. His two seasons at PSG were defined by two Ligue 1 champions and a Trophee des Champions. However, the club were largely underwhelming in European competitions, with two Round of 16 knockouts being the biggest of their failures. While fans started the debate of whether Ligue 1 is not up to the level of the SPL following Ronaldo’s comments, a quick look at the league rankings gives a conclusive answer.

As per a list of league rankings released by Opta Power Rankings, the Saudi Pro League ranks 27th. When comparing this to Lionel Messi’s Ligue 1 standing at an impressive fifth. Even his current league, the MLS ranks above that of the SPL, being 15th. Although one can’t tell for sure why the Portuguese star made such a claim, it is evident why Frank Leboeuf responded in such fashion.
