“2 players from CL winners & 7 from Europa strugglers, that’s criminal”- Fans react to Spain’s squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup omitting Sergio Ramos

“2 players from CL winners & 7 from Europa strugglers, that’s criminal”- Fans react to Spain’s squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup omitting Sergio Ramos

In a Spain squad announcement with few shocks, Sergio Ramos was not selected for a World Cup return. The Paris Saint-Germain defender, who was initially on La Roja’s provisional 55-man list, was not a member of Luis Enrique’s 26-man squad.

Ramos was earlier left out of the Euro 2020 squad due to an injury-plagued final Real Madrid season; his final international appearance came against Kosovo in March 2021 in qualification for Qatar 2022. Given his improved form and fitness at PSG as well as his leadership, there was a remote possibility that the 36-year-old might have been selected for his fifth World Cup.

In the end, Luis Enrique mostly stuck with the players he selected for Spain in the Nations League. One surprise was that Hugo Guillamon was chosen over Inigo Martinez at center-back. Thiago, a midfielder for Liverpool, was not recalled, but Ansu Fati, who has started just five games for Barcelona this year, did.
