Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal are all set to face off in the Arab Club Champions Cup Final. They have been two of the most active teams in the transfer market this year. Al-Nassr was the first one to strike upon European royalty after they signed Cristiano Ronaldo in January. Individually, the signing turned out to be quite successful. Ronaldo has had a very productive start to his spell, scoring 17 goals in 23 games.
But, team-wise it may not have benefited them. They were sitting atop of the league table when he joined but ended up finishing second. Irrespective of that, they now have a chance to win their first trophy with him on the team. They have also strengthened their lineup by buying Sadio Mane from Bayern Munich and Alex Telles from Manchester United.
Al-Hilal, the biggest rivals of Al-Nassr, tried to reciprocate the Ronaldo signing by signing a superstar themselves. They tried signing his biggest rival, Lionel Messi offering him a record £300m. However, he decided to play for Inter Miami. They even tried to sign Kylian Mbappe for a one-year loan after which he could join Real Madrid like he wanted. But that didn’t amount to anything either. While they have done transfer business of their own, signing Ruben Neves and Sergej Milinkovic Savic, they are yet to sign a superstar. The final could however prove they don’t need to do it.
Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal in the competition so far
Al-Nassr played Al-Shabab in the first match of the competition. They weren’t at their best at all. Cristiano Ronaldo started from the bench. While both teams had ample chances to score, none of them could finish. The match ended 0-0 and both had to settle for one point. The club went on to face Monastir which is when they returned to form. Ronaldo started the game and the difference was visible. Just before the end of the first half, Anderson Talisca scored the first goal giving them the lead.
The Portuguese superstar then doubled the lead in the 74th minute. An own goal brought the score back to 2-1. But two late goals helped Al-Nassr win the game 4-1. Al-Nassr then went on to face Zamalek in their last group-stage game. They needed a draw to qualify for the next round. They went 1-0 after conceding a penalty in the 53rd minute.
However, Ronaldo stepped up in the time of need, scoring an 87th-minute equalizer. The match ended 1-1 and Al-Nassr went to the quarter-finals. There, they defeated Raja CA 3-1 with relative ease. Ronaldo scored again along with goals for Al-Ghannam and Seko Fofana. In the semis, they faced Al-Shorta who gave them a run for their money. The only goal separating both teams was Ronaldo’s penalty in the 75th minute. This led them to the final.
Al-Hilal also had a Goalless draw in their opening game against Al Ahly Tripoli. They then lost the second game to Al-Sadd 3-2. This threatened their qualification for the next round. But a 2-1 victory against Wydad AC sealed it. But they faced League Champions Al-Itihaad in the quarter finals who had recently signed current Ballon D’or holder Karim Benzema. They went to the game as underdogs but came back with a 3-1 win. Al-Hilal then defeated Al-Shabab 3-1 to make it to the final against Al-Nassr. Thus, both teams set up an exciting final and end to the tournament.
Predicted line-up
Al-Nassr looks set to start the same lineup that started in the semi-finals. Their front three with Sadio Mane, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Talisca look very strong and will remain in their lineup.
Al-Hilal’s goalkeeper Al-Maiouf got sent off in the semis. Thus, they are going to replace him with Hbib Alwotayan. New signing Malcom who has already hit the ground running is all set to lead the line.
