England remained undefeated in the group stages. Winning 1-0 against Haiti in their first game. Defeating Denmark with an early goal from Lauren James, sister of Chelsea right-back Reece James. Lastly, thrashing China 6-1 in their last match of the group stages. Many fans started to question the team’s style of play, calling it mediocre. While some even called it boring to watch, since they were just able to drag out 1-0 victories in their first two games. Coach Sarina Wiegman, who is still undefeated in her stint as the coach of the Lionesses, decided to make some changes before the China game.

James was pushed into the Attacking midfielder role with Alessia Russo and Lauren Hemp acting as the two forwards. Surprisingly, this strengthened the team as China couldn’t cope with them. They ended up winning the game 6-1 with a brace from Lauren James. England, who are currently the champions of Europe after winning the UEFA Women’s Euros 2022 will go with huge confidence in the R-16 games because of the momentum they have.

On the other hand, Nigeria were drawn into arguably the toughest group in the competition. Consisting of the likes of Canada- who won the gold medal in the Olympics-, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland. While they managed to restrict the Canadians in a 0-0 stalemate in their first game. The Super Falcons shocked the co-hosts of the tournament, Australia, after winning 3-2 against them to qualify for the knockout stages.

Though they finished in second place in the group, after playing out another goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland. The team will now be hoping to win their first-ever match in the Round of 16. They are in a five-game unbeaten run and could certainly foil England’s chances.

After the impressive win against China, England are expected to field the same lineup for the match against Nigeria. The formation for the last game was 3-4-1-2, and seems to remain the same. Jess Carter, Millie Bright, and Alex Greenwood will start in the defense. However, all eyes will be on Lauren James who is in sublime form.

Though Nigerians will welcome back, Deborah Abioudin after serving her suspension from being sent off in the first game. But the lineup is set to remain unchanged with Abioudin most probably being kept on the bench. Asisat Oshoala will be the striker. She plays for Barcelona and scored a goal against Australia.

England’s predicted line-up:

Mary Earps, Jess Carter, Millie Bright, Alex Greenwood, Lucy Bronze, Katie Zelem, Georgia Stanway, Rachel Daly, Lauren James, Alessia Russo, Lauren Hemp

Chiamaka Nnadozie, Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Oluwatusi Demehin, Ashleigh Plumptre, Christy Ucheibe, Halimatu Ayinde, Rasheedat Ajibade, Toni Payne, Uchenna Kanu, Asisat Oshoala
